Adventurous Man And Dog Have Been Kayaking Mediterranean Together For 3 Years
The man and his ‘sailor dog’ have been travelling together for over two years.
Sergi Basoli first set off on his adventure in 2013, when he quit his job as an engineer and departed from the Olympic Harbour of Barcelona with his sights set on exploring as much of the Mediterranean coastline as he could. Yet, what started out as a solo trip soon turned into an adventure for two, as he picked up a stray dog along the way that became his faithful companion.
One year into his trip, Basoli was in Alghero, Sardinia when he spotted a stray dog run onto the middle of the road in front of him. Basoli approached the confused and frightened looking girl and noticed that she instantly eased up and seemed happy to have met someone. Basoli scooped her up then and there, and renamed her Nirvana. The two of them then set off on the kayaking journey together. While Basoli reveals Nirvana was seasick when she first went on the boat, she soon got used to it.
On his Kayak, Basoli carries with him a cellphone that he charges at bars, a self-made stove that he cooks fish on, which he catches fresh daily, and sleeping gear for when the duo camp out every night. Basoli says that the two kayak between 6 to 18 miles a day and then camp out on whichever beach they make it too. Occasionally when the weather is bad, they sleep at B&B’s or accept hospitality from new friends they meet along the way. The man spends €200 per month on food and gets an income from creating jewellery from seashells that he finds along the way. So far the two have travelled 3,106 miles together and they have no plans of slowing down. Follow their journey here and watch a part of it in the video below.
